10 years ago today (August 7th, 2008), the Police reunion tour came to an end at Madison Square Garden in New York. You’ve heard the lyrics to one of their songs, some think it’s stupid , some don’t but it’s definitely one of the most misunderstood songs by the Police. It’s “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.” on the album: Zenyatta Mondatta in 1980. Misunderstood or not it made it to number-10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sting has called “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da” one of his most misunderstood songs — and Police guitarist Andy Summers totally agrees with him.
“Actually, ‘De Do Do Do…’ is one of the most misunderstood songs we ever did. I always thought it was a brilliant lyric on Sting’s part, which was never understood, ’cause people just heard that and went, ‘Oh, that’s stupid.’ They took it completely out of context, because the chorus line is the logical answer to what he says in the verse, which is about the way journalists and critics misuse words and totally misunderstand. And that’s why ‘de do do do’ is about as meaningful as journalists get, he’s basically saying in a song.”
