You never know who is on bass

Ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor celebrates his 70th birthday today (January 17th).He was in the Stones from 1969 until 1974 so that means he played guitar on the album Exile on Main Street in 1972.  But not always guitar. On the song “Tumbling Dice” he played bass not Bill Wyman. He explains: how he, rather than bassist Bill Wyman, did it.

“Mick and Keith were running through the song and I was playing bass. Because what I was playing fitted the song, there was no need for him to come in at a later date and overdub bass. In those days, we used to do these crazy kind of open-ended sessions for weeks, where it seemed like the studio was the only place that existed. We’d live, sleep and breathe and eat in the studio and whoever was around at the time would play whatever was needed. And that’s probably why on some tracks I play bass, on some tracks Keith plays bass.”
