Neil Young and Crazy Horse played their first live show together 50 years ago today (February 12th, 1969) at the Bitter End in New York. Their first album was Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere in 1969. The first song we heard from them was “Cinnamon Girl” Neil Young wanted it to sound as big as the pyramids. Neil Young:
“I remember saying to the guys that ‘Cinnamon Girl’ should be like the Egyptians going across the desert — so it’s these big block chords. You’ve got to visualize the pyramids, big rocks rolling on logs and things across the sand, to get the picture, to create the sound — an image of what it was we were playing the soundtrack for, the grandness of it, the sound of it.”
