ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard celebrates his 70th birthday today (June 11th). The song “Cheap Sunglasses” from the album: Deguello in 1979 is a fan favorite. The fans let them know that they couldn’t drop it from the set. Bands that have been at it for a long time know you can only play so many songs from your new album in concert. People want to hear your classics. ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard recalls one song their fans just weren’t going to let them leave town without playing.
“Unfortunately, you’ve got so many songs that you have to do, or the audience they’ll let you know that they’re disappointed. One tour, we didn’t do ‘Cheap Sunglasses’ and we got a lot of flak back through the fan club and e-mail and stuff like that. There’s only so many slots that we can put new stuff in, so when we do do a new record we listen and we try to pick out the three or four or five songs we think will fit in with the show.”
