AC/DC singer Bon Scott would have turned 73 today (July 9th). One of their most successful songs was “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”. The title was inspired by a cartoon! The members of AC/DC may have grown up in Australia, but that didn’t stop them from watching American cartoons. Guitarist Angus Young talks about the one from the early 1960s that became the inspiration for “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.”
“There used to be a cartoon about a sea serpent called Beany and Cecil. But the bad guy in Beany and Cecil was a man called Dishonest John, and he used to always carry this card. Every time he appeared in the cartoon he used to hold up the card, y’know. ‘Ah-ha-ha, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,’ and he had his name, Dishonest John. That’s where we got that idea from.”
