U2 bassist Adam Clayton celebrates his 59th birthday today.(March 13) “With or Without You”” was U2’s first number-one hit in Billboard. Daniel Lanois, who co-produced it with Brian Eno, says they were lucky it worked out so well. He remembers how the track came together:
“’With or Without You’ started out with a tom-tom rhythm box pattern that Larry played on top of. Adam did this great deep bass part with a bass that he never uses for anything else, this little Ibanez. And then Edge played his infinite sustain parts with this sort of crying bird sound, which is really high. It just had that real nice dark sound from early on and we got lucky.”
