He did not like it

The Who: “Join Together” was a “stop gap single”  That’s a song not on an album to appease the record company.  The Who did it with “I can See for Miles”, to have product out while Pete Townshend was working on the rock opera “Tommy”. It was supposed to be part of the “Lifehouse” project which was abandoned. It was the fifth of The Who’s eight Top 20 singles in the U.S., peaking at number-17 on the Billboard Hot 100. “I Can See for Miles” was the only one of those to crack the Top 10, and then just barely. Roger Daltrey says “Join Together” isn’t a particular favorite of his.

“A stopgap single that Pete was very excited about. I liked the sounds it made, I didn’t like the song particularly. It just seemed to go on and on and on, and we used to affectionately call it ‘Groin Together,’ ‘cause we had much more fun doing that than actually making the record.”
