Kirk Hammett celebrates his 57th birthday today (November 18th). The Metallica song “St. Anger” proves that anger can be a good thing. It’s on the album Saint Anger and won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. The video for Metallica’s “St. Anger” was shot in a place where people had a lot of anger — San Quentin State Prison in California. Guitarist Kirk Hammett explains the idea behind the song.
“One of the concepts behind the song is that anger is not a bad thing. And it’s healthy to express anger. A lot of people think that anger just should be suppressed and shoved under the carpet and that always leads to greater problems. This is basically addressing anger as a positive, healthy thing that can lead to resolution. That’s one of the basic themes in the song.”
