“What the Hell; Man?”

In a unreleased interview Bob Dylan did with his now late friend Tony Glover in 1971, Dylan talked about going with his then wife Sara to see David Crosby and Graham Nash at New York’s Carnegie Hall on October 4th, 1971.

“The whole house was like the Fillmore. Carnegie Hall, people snorting coke in the aisles, everybody passing joints around … it was incredible.”

But, he says it got worse when Stephen Stills and Neil Young came on stage.

“They just sang this one song called ‘Helpless.’ And they just repeated this word over and over,” he said, laughing. “‘Helpless. Helpless. Helpless.’ And it really got to be a drag after a while, just hearing this word ‘Helpless.’ You just wanted to stand up and say, ‘What the [hell], man?’”

Nash, was contacted but he didn’t want to comment.

The interview, along with other pieces of Dylan memorabilia, are being put up for sale by Glover’s widow Cynthia at RR Auction in Boston on November 19th.
