While the Cat’s Away…

Roger Daltrey celebrates his 77th birthday today (March 1st). When recording The Who’s “Love, Reign O’er Me” for Quadrophenia Roger took some liberties. Roger Daltrey recalls that when he cut his lead vocal for the closing song on Quadrophenia, it was just him and the producer in the studio — and that they took some liberties with Pete Townshend’s original demo.

“Pete wasn’t there when I did that, and the demo wasn’t like that at all. It was very soft and laid back, and I loved going against what it is. And it was just myself and Glyn Johns and we attempted to do the kind of energy of the scream in ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ and turn it into a word, which was ‘love.’ And it worked.”
