Today (March 8th) is International Women’s Day. When Pat Benatar sings “Heartbreaker” these days, it isn’t the same as singing it back then. It reached number-23 on the Billboard Hot 100 more than 40 years ago and still performs it. In fact, she closes her shows with it. But she approaches the song very differently now than she did then.
“I can still sing ‘Heartbreaker’ and not feel any trepidation about doing it at all. I mean, I really still enjoy doing it. Different take, of course — tongue-in-cheek now. If you’re going to do it you’ve got to find a way to make it work for now. I mean, I could never go out there seriously — pointing and that bravado thing. What is that? They get the joke. The most important thing is to make sure you always get the joke. Otherwise, you are the joke.”
