Today (April 19th) marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Doors’ L.A. Woman album.
The title track “L.A. Woman” was a back-to-basics approach to recording re-kindled Jim Morrison‘s interest in their music. For what turned out to be their final album, L.A. Woman, The Doors abandoned longtime producer Paul Rothchild and changed the way they recorded. Guitarist Robby Krieger recalls that the way they did the album’s title track indicated to them that they’d made the right decision.
“It was very spontaneous. You know, up until that time, it was like really work just to get these songs out. And Jim had been getting more and more disinterested in the music — because of the Miami trial and stuff, he was kind of bugged. So, finally, on this last album we decided to produce it ourselves and he really became more into the music and we were able to do some songs, y’know, just right in the studio. Man, they just came out great.”
