This is a big day for Sammy Hagar! He’s being honored as ambassador of tourism for Los Cabos, Mexico.

“That is an honor I’ve been waiting for my whole life. I’ve been down here since 1981! It means so much to me, you don’t know, because this is my home away from home. So, very, very happy. It’s an honor. I can’t wait.”

After a ceremony at noon in the main plaza in San Jose Del Cabo, there will be a dinner with local dignitaries and then a show at his Cabo Wabo Cantina.

He says, “This is far beyond a dream I had and much more than a business to me. It’s become a way of life for me/us.”

Hagar opened the Cantina in 1990. Cabo means cape in Spanish, and Hagar shortened wobble to wabo.

When Hagar founded Cabo Wabo, he did so in partnership with Alex and Eddie Van Halen and Michael Anthony. When it became apparent that this was not going to be financially feasible for the band, Hagar bought out the others and has been laughing all the way to the bank ever since. Cabo spawned Cabo Wabo Tequila, which Hagar sold in 2007 for $80 million. And he has since opened Cabo Wabos in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas.
