And Howe

Yes guitarist Steve Howe celebrates his 72nd birthday today (April 8th). The song “Roundabout” off of the album: Fragile in 1971which peaked at number-13 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Yes’s second highest-charting U.S. single, after the chart-topping “Owner of a Lonely Heart; “marked a turning point in the way Yes recorded, as guitarist Steve Howe, who co-wrote it, explains

“Trevor Horn called the second Buggles album Adventures in Modern Recording and certainly ‘Roundabout’ was that kind of a thing — the first time we ever used guitar surgery and transplanted bits of things around, completely reinventing things like endings. We’d extend the track, it became a sort of limitless thing, ‘Well, you want to do that? Okay, well, stick some of that in there — you can do it then.’ It was like whatever it took, you wanted to get to that point where you could find your goal.”
