He Never Went

Police drummer Stewart Copeland turns 67 years old today (July 16th). The college-educated drummer Copeland used to tease Sting, who doesn’t have a degree, about one particular line in the song “Wrapped Around Your Finger”  on Synchronicity. Sting uses mythological and literary references gleaned from his extensive reading in “Wrapped Around Your Finger,” one of the four hits from the Police’s Synchronicity album. Drummer Stewart Copeland says he doesn’t mind that, but says he used to tease Sting about a line that irked him — “Things they never teach you ’bout in college.”

“Well, hey, I learned all about Jung, Freud, these guys in college and promptly forgot it because it bored me. Interestingly enough, when we would play college towns and he’d come out with that line, all the college kids who were studying Jung would cheer like crazy when he said that line, which is blatantly untrue. He never went to college. How would he know what they teach in college? He’s a very educated man. He taught himself everything he knows by reading Jung himself and making his own analysis. But they do teach it in college. I would give him a real hard time about this.”
