Guitarist Steve Clark joined Def Leppard on this day (January 29th) in 1978. He’ll be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band on March 29th. The Def Leppard song “Photograph” was their breakthrough hit. Drummer Rick Allen and guitarist Phil Collen say it was a really hard song to play at first.
Rick: “It was always really hard to play.”
Phil: “Isn’t that funny though?”
Rick: “Always a challenge.”
Phil: “But after you do it a while it’s like — when we done ‘Nine Lives,’ I couldn’t sing and play that at the same time. There’s no way. I can’t sing that high and play this riff and the solo’s really tricky. And then we do it a few times and it’s like ‘ding’ and you forget and it’s a doddle [easy].”
