New Who?

The Who plans to have the album out this year in conjunction with the Movin’ On tour, which starts May 7th in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It will be their first studio album since Endless Wire in 2006.When Pete Townshend went into Mark Knopfler’s British Grove Studios in London earlier this month to lay down backing tracks for The Who’s next album, it was without Roger Daltrey, who was on vacation.

Townshend sent Daltrey the demos late last year, but Roger wasn’t overly impressed. Roger Daltry:

“Since he’s been doing musicals and he’s writing this art project, which is a kind of musical with soundscapes and things, some of these songs, when I first heard them, sounded a little bit Broadway. And no disrespect [as] lyrically he’s one of the best guys in the business — I mean there’s no doubt about that. But, like I say, sometimes I go, ‘Ooh, I’m not sure I want to do this.’ So it’s like having a tooth out.”

Daltrey will try and wrap his head around the songs today (Monday) when he heads into a demo studio in England. Here he is on his songwriting process:

“I do sketches. I bugger about with the melodies and I sketch like an artist sketches. And then when I hear something that I think is connecting I go for it. Once I’ve got the sketch I can do it over and over again easily as anything. But to me it’s all about connecting the words that Pete’s written and connecting them with a spirit and a vibration that touches people and moves people. If you don’t do that then you’ve failed.”
