But it was a joke

Guns n’ Roses guitarist Slash celebrates his 54th birthday today (July 23rd). The song he wrote with Izzy Stradlin was kind of a joke. Slash says  “Mr. Brownstone”was totally meant to be tongue-in-cheek. It was on Appetite for Destruction, only released as a single in Britain, in the U.S. it was used on the B-side of both “It’s So Easy” and “Welcome to the Jungle.” but “Mr. Brownstone” has been played live at almost every Guns n’ Roses show and by band members at their own concerts as well. Slash remembers writing it.

“That was me and Izzy. That was actually a tongue-in-cheek song about our sort of creative, uh… Y’know, we were hanging around basically getting high and playing guitar and came up with these lyrics for ‘Mr. Brownstone.’ And Izzy had this main opening riff and then just sat there together and turned that into a song and throwing the words back and forth. But it was very tongue-in-cheek, but it turned out cool.”
