Neil Young doesn’t answer the Question

10 years ago today (October 23rd), Neil Young reunited Buffalo Springfield for his annual Bridge School Benefit concerts at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. The lineup also included Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, with bassist Rick Rosas and drummer Joe Vitale in place of the late Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin. The song “Mr. Soul” peaked at number-39 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the group’s highest charting U.S. single. Who is the mysterious “Mr. Soul” that Neil Young was writing about in his Buffalo Springfield classic of the same name?  He answered…and it’s still a mystery.

“Oh, I don’t know. I could never say. I just write the song. I wrote it on the floor of my bathroom on Utica Drive in Laurel Canyon in 1967, I think. It’s a process. Writing is something where if you’re thinking of what it is, then you’re not doin’ it.”
