First Time’s a Charm

Paul McCartney wrote their biggest hit, “Come and Get it”  The band is Badfinger.  Pete Ham wrote their other big hit “No Matter What” which has a lap steel solo played by guitarist Joey Molland…who never played a steel guitar before. Molland tells us how that solo came about.

“I’d worked out the solo on my Firebird, just slurring the strings. It was pretty much the same notes, but just bending the strings up to it, so it was a double note thing. And I bought a little lap steel on tour in America and I had it with me at the studio and the melody was so simple, I thought, ‘Let me try it on the lap steel,’ so I played it. And I’d never played lap steel in my life, other than in the house just goofing off. That’s why it kind of sounds a little bit “ooh-wee,” you know the way the notes hang out a little bit long. But it worked out good, everybody likes it.”
