Never Been There

You know the song by Supertramp: “Breakfast in America”? Roger Hodgson wrote it when he was 14 and had never been to America. It became the title track of Supertramp’s multi-million-selling Breakfast in America album was written nearly a decade and a half before they made that record. Supertramp keyboardist and singer Rick Davies gives the lowdown on Roger Hodgson’s song.

“Roger wrote this when he was about 14 as a schoolboy and he’d never been to America. The lyrics were very, what shall we say, stream of consciousness, or whatever. I don’t think they were too deep — I mean, just a light song. And he just started playing it in the studio at one time when we were doing Breakfast… and it took nothing to record it. Everybody started playing away and got the right part straight away. It’s a very simple song.”
