Bob Seger celebrates his 76th birthday today (May 6th) One of the songs on the album Night Moves Bob considers its lyrics some of the best he’s ever written. That song is Main Street. Bob Seger has said that the “Mainstreet” that inspired his song of the same title was actually Ann Street, which is just off Main Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he grew up. He talks about writing the song.

“The first four lines of it, really, were some of the best lines I’d ever written in my life. ‘Standing on the corner at midnight trying to get my courage up’ is the key line, and that just had such impact for me. I didn’t know where I was going after that. I sat down with a guitar, I sang that and I just sort of stopped dead and looked at the wall and said, ‘Boy, I’ve got to finish this one.’ And it ended up being ‘Mainstreet.’”
