Joe Beat Paul

The late Joe Cocker would have turned 77 today (May 20th). His very first single, way back in 1964, was a cover of The Beatles’ “I’ll Cry Instead.” When he got an album deal four years later, he titled his debut after another Beatles song, “With a Little Help from My Friends.” It wasn’t until after that album was released that he actually got to meet the Beatles at their Apple Studios and got yet another of their songs to cover, this time a newly written one. It was “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window”

“Denny Cordell, who produced my first two records, took me along there to meet the lads, which was The Beatles. And, of course, that was a nerve-wracking experience just to go down and meet ‘em. It was for me, anyway. Paul sat there at the piano and he sang me “Golden Slumbers” and “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window.” They were just about to come out and we beat them to it with the release of “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” but obviously I loved it when he played it to me.”
