Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be honored by his hometown university.
He’ll receive a posthumous doctoral degree in music from the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he was born and raised.
While Petty never went to the school, he did work there as a groundskeeper, and has been remembered at every football game there since his 2017 death with the playing and singalong of “I Won’t Back Down.”
Petty died from an accidental overdose on October 2nd, 2017. He was 66.
