Mick Jagger continues to defy the odds at age 80, singing better than ever, and still able to command and navigate a huge stage with energy normally reserved for people half his age. Of course, being the father of a six-year-old son also helps keep him on his toes.
He tells The Guardian he was “a bit out of practice” when his girlfriend, Melanie Hamrick, gave birth to their son Deveraux when he was 73. “It’s not like riding a bike. The more children you have, the more laissez-faire you get about them, to be honest. And it depends on the child — they have their own personalities and you can mold them to a certain extent, but you see their likes and dislikes and encourage them to do things they gravitate towards. It’s fun to have children, at any age. But if you’re working, and always away, you don’t get to enjoy it quite as much.
“[When Deveraux was born] I wasn’t working so much, so I was able to spend more time. And then we had the lockdown — he’s only six, and two of those years I did almost nothing [with the band].”
Jagger has seven other children with four different women. His oldest is 52-year-old Karis, born on November 4th, 1970. Her mother is actress Marsha Hunt.
