The upcoming reissue of The Cars‘ Heartbeat City came as bit of a suprise to someone close to the band — Bill Janovitz, author of the new book The Cars: Let the Stories Be Told.
Janovitz tells us that he had no idea plans for the box set were in motion when he finished the final draft of his book in the late spring. And when he asked members Greg Hawkes and David Robinson about it at a recent event, he got sort of a surprising answer.
“Guys, I just wrote this book, how come you didn’t tell me there was this Heartbeat City thing coming out? And David says, ‘They didn’t tell me.’ And again, this is the story of The Cars. They’re trying to sneak it by David because he’s going to have too much to say in the artwork, or I don’t know. But yeah, I’m eager to hear it too.”
Robinson did eventually get on board with the box set by contributing an essay on the artwork, while Hawkes ended up doing track-by-track notes.
The four-CD and one-LP set contains an disc of unreleased early mixes of the entire album, but Janovitz doesn’t think it will sound hugely different. “I’m not expecting a whole lot of surprises as they were mixing that record as they went.”
