The Doors are the latest act to participate in the “Song Around the World” series from Playing for Change, the multimedia project that aims to connect the world through music.
Their two surviving members — guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore — are joined by more than a dozen musicians from around the world, including Willie Nelson‘s sons Lukas and Micah Nelson, Foo Fighters keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and producer and bassist Don Was, on the band’s 1970 song “Riders on the Storm.” This new version also features a tribute to the late Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, as well as archival vocals from Jim Morrison.
The video for the song, which will premiere this Friday at Noon ET on the Playing for Change YouTube channel, will help support the Playing for Change Foundation’s first music program to be established in the U.S. It was organized in partnership with First Peoples Fund, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization. The group seeks to uplift Indigenous communities and give them a platform to share their history and voices.
Previous artists to re-record their songs for Playing for Change include The Band‘s Robbie Robertson with “The Weight,” Steve Miller “Fly Like an Eagle,” Jackson Browne “Doctor My Eyes,” Dr. John “Iko Iko,” Carlos Santana “Oye Como Va,” and John Paul Jones on Led Zeppelin‘s “When the Levee Breaks.”
