John Mellencamp continues to post videos sarcastically showing him trying to get in shape for his Dancing Words – The Greatest Hits Tour, which starts on July 10th in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This latest one shows him on the beach in what appears to be Santa Monica, California hanging on to pull-up loops while smoking a cigarette. He captioned it, “I’m gettin’ there.”
This follows videos of him sitting and smoking while doing voice exercises and saying he’s trying to get his voice in shape, and one of him walking on a treadmill while smoking.
Of course smoking is not recommended, but he’s credited cigarettes for the current sound of his voice during an interview in 2017 with fellow Hoosier Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning.
John Mellencamp, during a 2017 appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, talked about why he’s been smoking since he was 10.
“I sound like a black guy singing now. I mean that’s what I wanted. I wanted to sound like Louis Armstrong, but I didn’t. I sounded like a white guy and now I got it. These are my babies, come on. Rightfully or wrongfully I believe that it’s the combination of cigarettes and alcohol that get people. The two of them combined.”
The Dancing Words Tour – Greatest Hits tour is his first amphitheater tour in 17 years, and he’s promising a two-and-a-half hour show.
