Aerosmith have released another song off their Legendary Collector’s Edition reissue of their 1973 self-titled debut, which will be out Friday.
It’s a live version of “Mama Kin” recorded at Paul’s Mall in Boston on March 20, 1973, two months after the album’s release, complete with a guest saxophone player who does a solo.
In December 1994, Aerosmith opened up the Mama Kin Music Hall in their hometown of Boston, and sold their interest in it five years later, in 1999.
Steven Tyler has a tattoo on his arm with the phrase “Ma’ Kin.” He got it when the band was writing its first album because he had so much confidence in the song. Tyler and Joe Perry have often said that Tyler’s arm was too thin to fit the whole title.
The Legendary Collector’s Edition contains the original album remastered on 180-gram clear vinyl, a new 2024 mix pressed on 180g translucent red vinyl, a performance of most of the album and a few other songs from Paul’s Mall on 180g black vinyl. There’s also a host of recently unearthed and unheard studio tracks on 180g black vinyl, and an exclusive clear UV cloud-effect 12” vinyl with “Dream On” (2024 Remaster) and “Dream On” (2024 Mix) placed atop a printed sky-blue slipmat. It also contains stickers, a poster, and a hardcover book with never-before-seen photos and new interviews with all five original members as well as comments from Dolly Parton, Slash, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Sully Erna of Godsmack, and others.
There are also two fanpack editions that get you a satin bomber jacket and t-shirt, as well as versions with all the music on CD.
Among the studio bonus tracks are:
- “Train Kept A Rollin'” (Session Take)
- “Make It” (Rehearsal and Alternate Take)
- “Write Me a Letter” (Alternate Take)
- “Harmonica Bass Jam Jelly” (Session Take)
- “Joined at the Hip” (Aerojam)
