Metallica completed the first of their M72 world tour’s “No Repeat Weekends” on Saturday with their second show in Amsterdam, Holland — and, as promised, its setlist was 100% different than in their first concert in the city on Thursday.
As on Thursday, the band broke out three songs from their new 72 Seasons album, giving “You Must Burn!” its first performance anywhere and playing full versions of “If Darkness Had a Son” and the album’s title track in a concert setting for the first time. The 13 other songs included such classics as “Creeping Death,” “Wherever I May Roam,” “One” and “Enter Sandman,” plus the first live “Until It Sleeps” since early 2008. There’s plenty of fan-shot footage of the first two shows on YouTube.
In an interview with a Japanese outlet, drummer Lars Ulrich said he’s still not sure everyone — including him — totally grasps the concept behind the tour, which put simply is to play two entirely different setlists in each of the 22 cities they’ll be visiting.
He explained that the idea initially was to enhance the fan experience by only selling single tickets to both shows in each city. But they realized that was penalizing people who couldn’t make both, so they also made accommodations for those who could only attend one.
The next M72 dates are May 17th and 19th at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France.
