Freddie Mercury is the latest artist to be immortalized on a U.K. coin from the Royal Mint.
Showing him performing while arched back and looking up, the first coin was struck by his sister Kashmira Bulsara, who says, “Freddie would have been absolutely delighted to see himself honored in this way and to know that his family was part of bringing this tribute to life.
“He always had such respect for British traditions and institutions, and to have the Royal Mint celebrate his legacy with such beautiful artistry would have meant the world to him. The coin perfectly captures his passion and the joy he brought to millions through his music.”
The coin is now available through the Royal Mint website with prices starting at just over $24. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were over 7000 people queued waiting to purchase it.
The Royal Mint will also give a special gold proof version of the coin to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity founded in his memory. The charity will auction it in the coming months, continuing Freddie’s mission to support those affected by HIV and AIDS.
Other artists recognized by the Royal Mint include Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Queen, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, The Rolling Stones and The Police.
