And I Helped!

Peter Edward “Ginger” baker turns 80 years old today (Aug 19)  He drummed for Cream and says he deserves more credit for their most famous song... “Sunshine of Your Love” It was the riff heard ’round the world. from Disraeli Gears.  Writing credit was given to Jack Bruce, Peter Brown and Eric Clapton.  He recalls that singer-bassist Jack Bruce brought in “Sunshine of Your Love” at a time when he was coming up with great songs almost daily. Baker says he deserves some credit for helping the song sound much different than an earlier favorite by the band.

“He came up with this riff, it went like this [sings riff], like ‘I Feel Free’ [sings ‘I Feel Free’ riff]. It was the same sort of thing, you know [sings riff]. And I said, ‘No, man, it’s much too fast. Why don’t you slow it down? And then I put that backwards thing on it and Eric came up with the chords for that middle bit. That backwards thing, that’s an African approach to playing time instead of a Western approach. It works incredibly well on ‘Sunshine…’”
